New Queenstown Skatepark

On Saturday (12th June), the new Queenstown skatepark became open to the public.

From infonews.co.nz: This has been a real community initiative and has clearly been long awaited, particularly by our Queenstown skating community,” Mr Overton said.

The council contributed over $200,000 to the construction of the skatepark with the community contributing the remainder.

“In particular I think the council should acknowledged the driving force of local club Wakatipu Skateboarders Incorporated, in particular Craig Strong and more latterly the efforts of Councillor Cath Gilmour who assisted the club in attracting additional financial support to complete the bowl,” Mr Overton said.

The council also extended a vote of thanks to the following organisations and individuals for their support: Central Lakes Trust, The Community Trust of Southland, The Caversham Foundation, The Bill Torrance Charitable Trust, Nzone, Parklife at the Remarkables; Kiri Mains; Wakatipu Skateboarders Incorporated, www.queenstown.com, Dick Schulze and AJ Hackett Bungy.

An official opening party for the new park, which is being touted as New Zealand’s best skate park is being planned for September.

Skateboarder's Quest Impresses Council

from infonews.co.nz: FEILDING’S nationally-ranked skateboarder, Sean Cupples, is on a mission – to establish an indoor skatepark at Makino Park as part of the proposed Leisureville concept.

And the seriousness of the 15-year-old Feilding High School pupil’s intention was sharply underlined during public hearings on the Manawatu District Council’s 2008/09 Draft Annual Plan.

Sean not only spoke to his submission, but also presented council with a cheque for $349.20 as an initial contribution towards the Leisureville proposal.

“An indoor skatepark will be a very positive thing for Feilding,” he told council, “and be somewhere where people can have a good time and chill out.”

He said the indoor facility (best sited where the old wooden fortress used to be) would be ideal for skateboarders, BMX riders and roller bladers and more suitable than the existing skatepark in South Street that was open to the weather and often trashed by vandals.

“It will be a good alternative and something that can provide income for Feilding.”

Hamilton is the only centre in New Zealand that has an indoor skatepark and the appearance of one in Feilding is likely to attract national and international skaters to the region.

Sean, who is hoping to reach top ranking in the national 16 and under age group this year, said the money was raised at a skateboarding competition organised by the Feilding New Life Church’s “Young Example Setters” youth group.

“The council seemed very happy with the presentation,” said Sean. “Hopefully, there will be more to come.”

In fact, a further $220 has been raised after a skateboarding demonstration, “Taking It To the Streets”, in Palmerston North last Saturday.

New Life Church youth leader, Liz Perawiti, said Sean and his skateboarding colleagues were serious about raising money for the skatepark as they believed in the Leisureville concept and the impact it would have on the community.

“They also want to make a difference, lead by example and be positive role models in the community. They want to show what can be achieved when you set your mind to something.”

Manawatu District Mayor, Ian McKelvie, said the “unexpected” donation was welcomed by council. “It’s quite an amazing thing because it gives the community a bit of a tangible lead as to what people are thinking,” he said.

100 skateparks and still counting!

So far, over on the skatepark finder page, we've found a whopping 100 skateparks all over New Zealand. I have a strong suspician that this is not even half the number of skateparks around New Zealand. Our definition of a 'skatepark' is "anything that has been build for the purpose of skateboarding". So if you know of any skateparks we havn't located yet, or if you have information or photos of existing skateparks, please let us know.

Skatepark Finder has been updated!

After a rather extensive tour of the South Island, we've added a heap more skateparks to our skatepark finder page. We also cleaned this area up a bit to make it even easier to find skateparks. There's still a lot of North Island parks to add, which we'll be doing over time. Also, we plan on having a way for you to let us know where the skateparks that we missed are.

In the future, we are also considering having skate 'spots' as well as skateparks. This will have a way for you to add your favourite skate spots to KickFlip.co.nz. Just an idea at the moment, so let us know what you think.

A happy new year to all NZ skaters. Don't forget to tell your mates about us! Cheers.

Volcom "Wild in the Parks" Comp

The Volcom "Wild in the Parks" amateur skate comp was held at Chaffers skatepark, Wellington CBD on Saturday (8th Dec).

This event is not about how they land the tricks, but it's judged on what tricks they attempt. The international event is also held in Australia and the US. The winners from the two divisions from the event are sent to compete in Sydney.

Bennet Field, from Wellington, came second at the nationals in Auckland last month and is now showing what he has to offer at the local parks. Bennet has already got his hands on a wild card entry to the series finale in Sydney.

Volcom are looking at holding other events to find more talented Skaters are New Zealand, giving the chance for other Skaters to try out and compete in the event.

THPS vs SKATE

For many years Tony Hawks Pro Skater has, in my opinion, been the best skateboarding game around. It has steadily improved in it's graphics and gameplay to some extent. You can do a heck of a lot more in the latest versions than you could back in the days of the Playstation 1. However, one thing that has pretty much stuck throughout the series (9 in total now), is the same old way you do tricks. The number of tricks you can do has increased, but playing it is just too fake. It's just too easy to do a million tricks in one 'combo'.

Electronic Arts, the creators of SKATE, probably saw this as their way to win over skater fans. They created a pretty awesome game, cool graphics and fun to play. Sure it's the first of it's type from EA, so there is plenty of room for improvement, but the way you do tricks is so much better. It really resembles doing tricks in real life. There's no 'combos', rather you score points for the 'line' you pull off, which is pretty much what pro skaters do in real life. Heaps better than stringing a billion point combo out, connected by manuals and grinds. If you've got a new gaming console, I really recommend skate.
